Standing in Nothingness
Painting Series
2016

In Standing in Nothingness, animal figures emerge as faint, spectral presences within abandoned architectural spaces—remnants of human activity now left to decay. Rendered in cold, bluish transparencies, these creatures appear disoriented, suspended in a liminal state between visibility and disappearance.

This series reflects on the disintegration of ecological balance in the Anthropocene. The natural habitats of these animals have been erased, and what remains is the artificial void: empty walls, broken floors, industrial ruins. The human figure is absent, yet its presence is inscribed in every surface—an echo of domination, neglect, and withdrawal.

By placing these ghostly animals within derelict structures, the work explores the paradox of survival in a world shaped by abandonment. The animals stand in spaces that no longer belong to them—nor to us. They occupy the aftermath.

Standing in Nothingness questions what it means to exist in an environment where systems have collapsed and relationships between species have been severed. It is less about illustrating extinction, and more about sensing its atmosphere—its silence, its distortion of space, and its long shadow on the present.
